Mornings are getting colder in La Paz. Paceños have started to wrap up in thick, woolen layers and coats, preparing for their winter months. While the northern hemisphere’s images of hot beaches, ice creams and summer holidays dominate our global perception of the months of July and August, the southern hemisphere faces some of its coldest gusts of wind during these months. From May to October, La Paz experiences temperatures ranging from five to fifteen degrees celsius during the day which frequently drop below freezing at night. Although this might be the case for Bolivia’s winter months, barbeques in the gleaming sun on Christmas day are a common occurrence in this southern hemispheric country. 

The cold should not deter Paceños from adventuring outdoors. As Bolivian Express explores in this issue’s depiction of winter in Bolivia, there is a lot that cannot be missed outside of the warm comfort of our homes. The snow-capped Illimani adds to the city’s wintry feel and we temporarily struggle to imagine how the snow could possibly be melting given the chilly temperatures. As Valeria Dorado captures in her stunning series of photographs, La Paz thrives during these months. If vibrancy is what you’re seeking during this season, we encourage you to wrap up warm and take a scroll around the city to take in the colourful murals created by the young artist Dayme Paymal. On this walk, make sure to make your way to Sopocachi to pick up some food at the new and innovative fast-food stall La Rufina, which makes traditional Bolivian street food feel fancy and sophisticated. Blink and you’ll miss it and it’ll be summer before you know it. 

The streets of La Paz will surely prove to be more lively this winter as tourists from around the world are starting to trickle into the country. Selina Hostel are welcoming in the intrepid bunch as they’ve opened their doors for this busy season for the first time in almost a year. While it may have been a while since a backpacker’s desert boots or salt crusted trainers have graced the cobbled road along the Witches’ Market, we won’t stay here for long as we head over to Tokyo where our Bolivian Olympians are aiming for gold. We have a look at Bolivia at the Olympics, delve into its history at the games and see who our medal hopefuls are.

Las mañanas son cada vez más frías en La Paz. Los paceños han comenzado a abrigarse en chompas y abrigos gruesos, de lana, preparándose para los meses de invierno. Si bien las imágenes del hemisferio norte de playas calientes, helados y vacaciones de verano dominan nuestra percepción global de los meses de julio y agosto, el hemisferio sur enfrenta algunas de sus ráfagas de viento más frías durante estos meses del año. De mayo a octubre, La Paz experimenta temperaturas que oscilan entre cinco y quince grados centígrados durante el día, que con frecuencia caen por debajo del punto de congelación durante la noche. Aunque este podría ser el caso de los meses de invierno de Bolivia, las barbacoas bajo el sol resplandeciente, el día de Navidad, son algo común en este país del hemisferio sur.

El frío no debería disuadir a los paceños para salir a la calle. Cómo Bolivian Express explora en la descripción de este número del invierno en Bolivia, hay muchas cosas que no pueden perderse fuera de la cálida comodidad de nuestros hogares. El Illimani cubierto de nieve se suma a la sensación invernal de la ciudad y, temporalmente, nos cuesta imaginar cómo la nieve podría estar derritiéndose dadas las frías temperaturas. En esta caminata, asegúrese de dirigirse a Sopocachi para comprar algo de comida en el nuevo e innovador puesto de comida rápida La Rufina, que hace que la comida callejera tradicional boliviana se sienta elegante y sofisticada. Parpadea y te perderás, y pronto será ya verano antes de que te des cuenta.

Las calles de La Paz seguramente serán más animadas este invierno, ya que los turistas de todo el mundo están comenzando a acudir al país.
