Stretching across Bolivia’s heartlands and towering over La Paz and Lake Titicaca are the meandering cluster of mountains known as the Cordillera Real. This mountain range is home to some of Bolivia’s tallest mountains, the enigmatic Illimani stands shoulder to shoulder with many more 6000 metres plus high mountains, casting their shadows on La Paz and the surrounding area. Often found in the Cordillera Real exploring every nook and cranny, as well as capturing the mountain ranges’ beauty in enthralling photos, is Gabriel Vargas. 

Vargas is a guide and has undertaken many routes along this belt of snow-capped peaks. He is not often seen without his trusted camera by his side with which he captures expansive landscapes to share with those who are not lucky enough to take up the trail and behold the sights of the Cordillera Real. “What attracts me most to the mountains and glacier tops is the peace of nature accompanied with the adrenaline,” he said. 

He spoke to me about his journey to photographing the Cordillera Real and how he ended up starting up Cima Experiencia, his own mountain tour company. “I was always fond of photography, it was ever-present in my life since I was little thanks to my father. At 18 I took my first photography course and it was at 28 when I decided to educate myself even more with the handling of the camera and dedicate my profession to Photography.” A tragic accident in 2016 had led Vargas down a different path as he was involved in a serious crash when mountain biking downhill, “It was after an accident that I had on a bicycle training in Valle Sagrado near Cusco. After a lot of physiotherapy, I came to the conclusion that I would change my course to do what I love and enjoy every step of the way.” It was from here he took on the path that led him to the Cordillera Real and to paint Instagram feeds with wondrous photos of the mountain belt. 

Often said by the mountaineering community is that the Cordillera Real is one of the most picturesque scenes in the world. This was something that Vargas had reiterated to me, stating that while he had not been outside of Bolivia to hike, countless tourists had lamented about the beauty of these snowy giants. It isn’t just the snowcaps to behold, Vargas had told me of a trail he took to the Yungas that was 70km long and crossed the eerily beautiful Valle de Las Ánimas and the Jathi Qullu glacier. “It took me four days to carry out this exploration through lands that I did not know,'' he explained. “The magic of this walk was in crossing the city through the canyons of Las Ánimas, then going through the snow-capped mountains of the Real Andes mountain range and then coming to a completely different panorama when reaching the tropics of the Yungas.” 

However, in these unprecedented times, companies like Cima Experiencia have struggled as we locked ourselves in instead of exploring the outdoors due to the pandemic. “Where the pandemic affected a lot was in the tourism sector, both the agencies and the mountain guides.” On the other hand, he explained to me that the mountain range had benefited from a trend we have seen across the world. “The mountains were not negatively affected by the pandemic'', Vargas told me. “Rather I think that in some way it did them good because many times when man walks through he leaves his garbage or destroys parts of it.” With a renewed collective outlook on how our environment has fared well with the majority of us locked indoors, perhaps this will be something that will change when we can eventually take to the peaks without the threat of Covid-19 on our minds. Vargas has told me how “among mountaineers, there is a lot of awareness with the environment and respect for the mountains.” Perhaps this is time to change public perception on the topic of the environment and tourism. 

It is a place that Vargas loves and clearly feels a lot of affinity with. As we start to venture outside this winter, perhaps this is one thing to tick off your bucket list. The extreme adrenaline coupled with the divine serenity at the top is perhaps one of the greatest feelings. Vargas explained it to me perfectly as we closed our discussion, “I love getting to know new places, especially when it is so beautiful, where there is a lot of peace and one can easily find one's balance.”

Extendiéndose a lo largo de Bolivia, y elevándose sobre La Paz y el Lago Titicaca, se encuentra el grupo de montañas conocidas como la Cordillera Real. Esta cadena de montañas alberga algunos de los picos más altos de Bolivia, ya que el enigmático Illimani se encuentra al lado de montañas con más de 6.000 metros de altura. Gabriel Vargas, el fotógrafo boliviano, captura la belleza que ofrecen, esta cadena de montañas andinas, a través de las fotos que saca en cuanto a su íntima exploración de todos los rincones y recovecos de la Cordillera Real. 

Vargas es guía, y ha realizado muchas rutas a lo largo de este cinturón de picos nevados. No se lo ve a menudo sin su cámara al lado y con la que captura paisajes expansivos para compartir con aquellos que no tienen la suerte de tomar el sendero y contemplar las vistas de la Cordillera Real. “Lo que más me atrae de las montañas y las cimas de los glaciares es la paz de la naturaleza acompañada de la adrenalina”, afirma. 

Nos habló sobre su viaje a la Cordillera Real y cómo terminó iniciando Cima Experiencia, su propia empresa de excursiones por montaña. “Siempre me gustó la fotografía, siempre estuve presente en mi vida desde que era pequeño, gracias a mi padre. A los 18 hice mi primer curso de fotografía y a los 28 me decidí a educarme aún más con el manejo de la cámara y dedicarme profesionalmente a la fotografía ”. Sin embargo, un accidente grave en bicicleta, en 2016, cambió la trayectoria de la vida de Vargas. “Tuve un accidente durante un entrenamiento de bicicleta en Valle Sagrado cerca de Cusco. Después de mucha fisioterapia, llegué a la conclusión de que cambiaría mi rumbo para hacer lo que siempre he amado y disfrutado hacer ”. En este momento, tomó el camino que lo llevó a la Cordillera Real y a la plataforma social: Instagram, donde exhibe sus fascinantes fotografías.

En la comunidad montañista de Bolivia, se dice frecuentemente que la Cordillera Real es uno de los escenarios más pintorescos del mundo. Esto era algo que Vargas me había reiterado. Incluso, al estar en países extranjeros, Vargas se acuerda de los innumerables comentarios positivos de turistas que visitaron la Cordillera. Además, Vargas me había hablado de un sendero de 70 km. que tomó a los Yungas que pasaba por el hermoso Valle de Las Ánimas y el glaciar Jathi Qullu. “Me tomó cuatro días realizar esta exploración por tierras que no conocía”, explicó. “Lo más mágico de esta caminata, fue poder atravesar la ciudad por los cañones de Las Ánimas, las montañas nevadas de la Cordillera de los Andes y de repente llegar a un paisaje completamente diferente en los Yungas”.

Sin embargo, durante la pandemia, empresas como Cima Experiencia han tenido problemas, ya que las oportunidades de salir de la casa se limitaron dramáticamente. Nos quedamos encerrados en nuestras casas. “La pandemia afectó al sector turístico, tanto a las agencias como a los guías de montaña”. Por otro lado, me explicó que la cordillera se había beneficiado desde un punto de vista ambientalista. “Las montañas no se vieron afectadas negativamente por la pandemia”, me dijo Vargas. “Más bien, creo que se veían menos polucionadas”. Esperamos que las vistas de las montañas, sin basura, puedan cambiar la actitud de la gente para que podamos cuidar nuestro entorno al salir de casa. Vargas me contó cómo “entre los montañeros hay mucha conciencia ambiental, y mucho respeto por la naturaleza que caracteriza la montaña”. Quizás esto va a llevar a que cambiemos nuestras percepciones sobre el tema del medio ambiente y el turismo.

La Cordillera es un lugar que a Vargas le encanta, y donde siente una conexión emocional profunda. Seguro que este lugar va a ser un destino popular para los ciudadanos nacionales y turistas quienes ya están empezando a aventurar hacia allí desde el invierno que transcurre actualmente. La adrenalina de estar en las montañas en combinación con la serenidad divina, que se encuentra en la cima, es una de las mejores sensaciones. Vargas explica: “me encanta conocer nuevos lugares, sobre todo cuando son tan bonitos, donde hay mucha paz y donde uno puede encontrar fácilmente el equilibrio.”
