Es hora de recordar

Imbalance, disconnection, despair, misunderstanding. Confinement. Time and space have been transformed. There isn’t anyone who doesn’t ask, ‘when can I go out again?’

For that reason, and many more, now is a good time to remember a special place that, even without knowing, lives in a very intimate place within us all - the sacred Lake Titicaca.

There’s value in the remembrance of joy, when we think of this lake’s ancestral importance and its support of diverse cultures for thousands of years. In fact, its relevance is so profound that without this lake there would be no life in the Altiplano - the waters of Titicaca nurture a wide region that supports thousands of families from diverse ecosystems essential to life.

There are so many things that we can remember about this huge lake. In ancient Andean mythology, Lake Titicaca is not known to be masculine, in reality the lake is praised as a female deity: Qotamama, Mother of Waters. Qota Awicha or Qota Achachila are also part of this memory.

For those who feel the call to remember this closeness to Lake Titicaca, sustainable tourism will be, among other possibilities, perhaps the most attractive. The lake will also be an option for those who want to breathe that peaceful air from the shores so characteristical that it only describe itself, for those who dare to feel the liquid ice coming down from the Andes Mountains on their fingertips, for those who dream of the abundant underground existence that this immense being protects.

The imaginary division of the territory generated by the political-administrative frontiers, have meant a lottery win for Bolivia. We are blessed that on the Bolivian side of this space shared with Peru, Bolivia has the most valuable islands in all of Lake Titicaca. That is why this time, the call isn’t just to get to Copacabana as custom dictates, but to discover the heavenly destination that is found after sailing a little. The majestic Isla del Sol and its partner, the Isla de la Luna, await you with open arms with their formidable beauty.

According to the myth that the Incas themselves spread to secure their greatness, Lake Titicaca, and specifically, the Isla del Sol are the mythical origin of the Inca empire. From its waters came Manqo Qhapaq and Mama Ocllo, the sibling couple who founded Cusco and taught the people of this vast territory "the ways of the Inca people". Although ancient history tells us that for thousands of years both islands have been pilgrimage destinations for peoples throughout the region, it is surely this most recent story that today attracts thousands of tourists who come from afar to connect with this sacred place.

Hidden between takanas (cultivation terraces) in the southern part of the Isla del Sol, at 4010 metres above sea level, is the only ecological hostel on the entire island: the Ecolodge "La Estancia". Built twenty years ago with ecological design principles, the Ecolodge is made up of fifteen rustic adobe huts with thatched roofs that preserve the ancestral architectural knowledge found in the area. A simple yet cozy interior design, and generous and friendly service from people in the community, characterize this unique destination.

Immersed within the community of which it’s a part of, the Ecolodge offers a proud and genuine look at the culture that welcomes it. The exchanges with the people from this peculiar world whom with so much love call this “the island”, are always unforgettable and enriching. Ultimately, that's what travel is all about - removing the barriers of the mind and expanding the horizons of the heart.

In their cabin, guests arriving from many corners of the world receive a beautiful Welcome Booklet that reads: “Look out the window from the comfort of your cabin, sit on a bench in the garden, enjoy the dazzling view and take deep breaths . Let the peace settle. You are at home". This is precisely the experience that the ecolodge creates day by day for those who visit it.

There is no sensation comparable to seeing the sun rise behind the Cordillera Real de Los Andes or seeing the reflection of the full moon on the calm waters of the lake. Those who have previously been immersed in the universe of contemplation experienced in the landscapes that characterise this part of the world, know that we have not yet invented the words to describe that emotion.

Above all, this little note is an invitation to remember that our land is alive and that it exists more, the closer we get to it. Our memory is not in a museum - as we were led to believe - but it’s here, closer and more alive than ever. So it’s time to reconnect with the cycles of life - there’s no better place than this. Let's go back, because it’s also time to recognize that it’s the Mountains, and it’s this Lake, that bring us the memory of balance that we need so much.

Desequilibrio, desconexión, desesperación, desentendimiento. Encierro. El tiempo y el espacio se han transformado. No hay quien no se pregunte: ¿cuándo podré salir de nuevo?

Por este motivo, y muchos más, ahora es buen momento para recordar un lugar especial que, aún sin saberlo, vive en un lugar muy íntimo dentro nuestro: el sagrado Lago Titicaca.

Vale la alegría recordar que este lago tiene una importancia ancestral y que viene sosteniendo diversas culturas desde hace miles de años. De hecho, su relevancia es tan profunda que sin este lago no existiría vida en todo el Altiplano – las aguas del Titicaca nutren una amplia región que sustenta a miles de familias a partir de un ecosistema diverso, esencial para la vida.

Hay tantas cosas que podemos recordar sobre este inmenso lago. Por ejemplo, que en la ancestral cosmovisión andina no se entiende al Lago Titicaca como masculino sino que en realidad el lago es alabado como una deidad femenina: Qotamama, Madre de las Aguas. Qota Awicha o Qota Achachila también son parte de esta memoria.

Para quien sienta el llamado de recordar esa cercanía con el Lago Titicaca, el turismo sostenible será, entre otras posibilidades, quizás la más atractiva. Lo será también para quien quiera respirar ese aire de paz de las orillas, tan característico, que sólo logra describirse a sí mismo, para quien se anime a sentir en la punta de los dedos el hielo líquido que baja de la Cordillera de Los Andes, para quien sueñe con la abundante existencia subterránea que este inmenso ser resguarda.

La ilusión de división del territorio generada por las fronteras político-administrativas, han significado la lotería para Bolivia. Tenemos la bendición de que del lado boliviano de este espacio compartido con Perú se encuentran las islas más valiosas de todo el Lago Titicaca. Por eso esta vez, el llamado no consiste únicamente en llegar hasta Copacabana como dicta la costumbre, sino en descubrir el destino paradisíaco que se encuentra tras navegar un poco. La majestuosa Isla del Sol y su complemento, la Isla de la Luna, las cuales te esperan de brazos abiertos con su belleza formidable. 

Según el mito que los mismos Incas difundieron para afianzar su grandeza, el Lago Titicaca, y en específico, la Isla del Sol son el origen mítico del imperio Incaico. De sus aguas salieron Manqo Qapac y Mama Ocllo, los hermanos-pareja que fundaron El Cusco y enseñaron a las gentes de todo este vasto territorio “the ways of the Inca people”. Aunque la antigua historia nos cuenta que durante miles de años ambas islas han sido destinos de peregrinación de pueblos de toda la región, es seguramente esta historia más reciente que hoy en día atrae a miles de turistas que llegan desde lejos a conectarse con este lugar sagrado.

Escondido entre takanas (terrazas de cultivo) en la parte sur de la Isla del Sol, a 4010 msnm, se encuentra el único albergue ecológico de toda la isla: el Ecolodge “La Estancia”. Construido hace ya veinte años con preceptos de diseño ecológicos, el “Ecolodge” está conformado por quince cabañas rústicas de adobe y techos de paja que rescatan los saberes arquitectónicos ancestrales de la zona. Un diseño interior simple pero acogedor (simple yet cozy), y un servicio amable y generoso brindado por gente de la comunidad, caracterizan este destino único.

Inmerso dentro de la comunidad de la cual hace parte, el “Ecolodge” ofrece una mirada noble y genuina de la cultura que lo acoge. El intercambio con las personas de este peculiar mundo que con tanto amor llamamos “la isla”, es siempre inolvidable y enriquecedor. Finalmente, de eso se tratan los viajes – de eliminar las barreras de la mente y ampliar los horizontes del corazón.   

En su cabaña, huéspedes que llegan desde muchos rincones del mundo, reciben un lindo Welcome Booklet que se lee así: “Mire por la ventana desde la comodidad de su cabaña, siéntese en un banco en el jardín, disfrute de la vista deslumbrante y respire profundo. Deje que la paz se asiente. Usted está en casa”. Es precisamente esa la experiencia que el “Ecolodge” inventa día a día para quienes lo visitan.

No existe sensación comparable a la de ver el sol nacer detrás de la Cordillera Real de Los Andes o la de ver el reflejo de la luna llena sobre las aguas calmas del lago. Quienes ya se vieron antes sumergidos en el universo de contemplación que se experimenta ante los paisajes que caracterizan a esta parte del mundo, saben que aún no hemos inventado las palabras para describir esa emoción.

Por sobre todas las cosas, esta pequeña nota es una invitación para recordar que nuestro territorio está vivo y que más existe en cuanto más nos acercamos a él. Que nuestra memoria no está en un museo - como nos hicieron creer - sino que está aquí, cerca y más viva que nunca. Por eso, es tiempo de volver a conectar con los ciclos de la vida - no hay mejor lugar que este para hacerlo. Volvamos, porque es también tiempo de reconocer que son las Montañas, y es este Lago, quienes nos traen la memoria del equilibrio que tanto necesitamos.

Hoy te invito también a que te preguntes, con la mezcla perfecta de nostalgia, humildad y urgencia que el caso amerita: ¿Cuándo volveré al Lago Titicaca? Ahora sabes que hay un lugar espectacular esperando por ti. Sabes también que, ahora más que nunca, es tiempo de volver.
