An interview with the singer Vero Pérez

AA: Tell us about your new album ‘Cadáver Exquisito’

VP: I created this album during the pandemic. I felt inspired by the poetry that I had been reading at the time and some old favourites. Musicalising poetry was an idea that came to me. I recorded the 10 songs in the space of two months, nine are poems by Bolivian authors and one of which I wrote myself.

AA: Which were your main sources of inspiration for this album?

VP: Loneliness, sadness, uncertainty… I think this pandemic has affected us in many different ways. I wasn’t dealing with the situation well and I believe music saved me, as it always does. 

IRP: Composing songs from Bolivian poetry seems to be an innovative idea. How did this come about? 

VP: I personally feel that poetry is very musical and words are lyrical. I was playing my guitar a lot during the pandemic and the songs came to me at a time of a lot of introspection on a musical and spiritual level. 

IRP: Who is your favourite Bolivian author and why?

VP: I have many favourite Bolivian authors. Matilde Casazola, Jaime Sáenz, Blanca Wiethüchter, Paola Senseve, Jessica Freudenthal, Julio Barriga, are amongst some of the poets whose works I have musicalised and are therefore my favourites.

IRP: Which attributes stand out the most from Bolivian poetry/literature? Is there a common denominator? 

VP: Bolivian poetry is very natural and organic. There is a lot of sadness and light in these works. Light and dark dichotomies are prevalent in Bolivian literature and lyrical hope has always drawn me in. 

AA: Which were the challenges that you had to face while producing music during a pandemic? 

VP: Luckily, I was able to record all of the instrumental parts. It was a personal challenge that was important for my career but I managed to do this thanks to So Myung Jung, the sound engineer and I recorded it in my great friend Gigio Diaz’s studio ‘Fuerte audio’ so I had all of the necessary support. Musicians who featured on the album even sent their recordings to me directly from New York and we edited it here [in Bolivia]. 

AA: On which music platforms is it possible to listen to the new album? 

VP: You can find the album on all of the usual digital platforms. However, I am seriously considering releasing a hard copy of the album because I want the poetic content to be complimented by a front cover illustrated by the incredible Alejandra Alarcon. In this way, you will not only own a CD full of music but also a work of art.

Una entrevista con la cantautora Vero Perez

AA: Cuéntanos sobre su nuevo disco Cadáver Exquisito 

VP: El disco, Cadáver Exquisito lo hice durante la pandemia motivada por la poesía que estuve leyendo durante ese tiempo y mucho tiempo atrás. Me nació musicalizar poesía. Son 10 canciones que grabé en dos meses, nueve son poemas de autores bolivianos y una es de mi autoría.

AA: ¿Cuáles fueron sus inspiraciones principales para este disco?

VP: La soledad, la tristeza, la incertidumbre... Creo que la pandemia nos ha tocado de diferentes maneras; personalmente, en un primer momento la pasé muy mal. Creo que la música me salvó una vez más.

IRP: Componer canciones de poesía boliviana parece una idea muy innovadora, ¿Qué faceta de Vero Perez es esta?

VP: La poesía es para mí muy musical, y las palabras tienen melodías. Estuve tocando mucha guitarra este tiempo, así fueron naciendo canciones es una etapa de mucha introspección a nivel musical y espiritual.

IRP: ¿Quién es tu autor boliviano favorito? ¿Por qué? 

VP: Tengo muchos autores bolivianos favoritos. Matilde Casazola, Jaime Sáenz, Blanca Wiethüchter, Paola Senseve, Jessica Freudenthal, Julio Barriga, son algunos de los poetas que he musicalizado. 

IRP: ¿Qué atributos se destacan en la poesía/literatura boliviana? ¿Hay algún común denominador?

VP: La poesía boliviana es muy natural y orgánica. En esta literatura hay mucha tristeza pero también luz. Está plagada de claroscuros, y creo que eso es lo que me ha atraído siempre, una esperanza lírica.

AA: ¿Cuáles fueron los desafíos que tuvieron que enfrentar en cuanto a la producción de música durante una pandemia?

VP: Por suerte yo grabé todos los instrumentos, fue un reto personal importante en mi carrera y lo logré gracias a So Myung Jung que fue el ingeniero de sonido. Grabé todo en el estudio de Gigio Diaz ‘Fuerte audio’ así que tuve el apoyo necesario.  Además, tengo invitados que mandaron sus grabaciones desde Nueva York, y acá trabajamos la edición..

AA: ¿En cuáles plataformas musicales podemos escuchar el nuevo disco?

VP:  En todas las plataformas digitales, sin embargo, estoy tomándome muy en serio el disco físico, ya que como se trata de un disco de poesía, haré un libro con el arte de la genial Alejandra Alarcon. Así que si consiguen el disco físico será igual una obra de arte.
