Cholitas are indigenous Quechua-Aymara women who are identifiable because of the traditional Bolivian pollera skirts they wear. These women are the face of resilience. In many cases, unsupported, uncared for, yet undeterred. They are always stepping up in order to not only support themselves, but also their local communities. They are known to be hardworking, strong, and enterprising women by nature. Because so many of these women rely on informal trade as their livelihoods, they have had to adapt their jobs according to demand during this health crisis. Angela, who has set up her commerce a few blocks from my house, now sells eucalyptus leaves – a medicinal tree used to fight respiratory infections. She is not alone. Many salespeople have been forced to become flexible in what they sell. Commerce is vital for our subsistence and for our daily needs. Cholitas sell their goods in neighbourhood stores, markets, on street corners, in the countryside, as farmers, and in many other key sectors of society.

Cholitas son las mujeres indígenas quechuas-aymaras que se las identifica por usar las tradicionales faldas de pollera bolivianas. Estas mujeres son el emblema de la resistencia. Siempre dando un paso al frente no solo para mantenerse a sí mismas, sino también a sus comunidades. En muchos casos, sin apoyo, sin cuidado, pero sin desestabilizarse. Se conoce que son mujeres trabajadoras, fuertes y emprendedoras por naturaleza. Debido a que muchas de estas mujeres dependen del comercio informal como medio de vida, han tenido que adaptar su mercadería de acuerdo a la demanda durante esta crisis de salud. Ángela, que instaló su comercio a pocas cuadras de mi casa, ahora vende hojas de eucalipto, un árbol medicinal que se usa para combatir las infecciones respiratorias. Ella no está sola. Muchos vendedores se han visto obligados a ser flexibles en lo que venden. El comercio es vital para nuestra subsistencia y para nuestras necesidades diarias. Las cholitas venden sus productos en las tiendas del barrio, en los mercados, en las esquinas, en el campo, como agricultores y en muchos otros sectores importantes de la sociedad.
