The pandemic has changed our lives in many different ways and as much I would like to discuss all of them today I wanted to talk about traveling.

We, as humans, were used to moving around freely most of the time (or not?), while some restrictions were common (visas, passport and of course security restrictions) we didn’t deal with a paralyzed world as we did in 2020.

For many of us, traveling is part of our lives, we travel for work, for recreational purposes, for family issues, health issues and I could go on and on, but you get the idea, we move around.

But the world has changed now, and as much as I want to see us going back to “normal”  I think the way we travel will be changed for good.

Is this a good thing or bad one? I don´t think there's an answer to that yet, but nowadays there are so many things we have to take into consideration if we want to travel abroad:

Borders: some countries have closed their borders, now it's mandatory to research ahead of time and learn about travel restrictions.

Get tested: most countries require a test and quarantine, do you have the time to comply with their regulations?, most of us only have two or three weeks of paid vacations.

Delays: delays and cancellations everywhere, be prepared for your flight being canceled or postponed without previous notice.

Protect yourself and others: mask up! while traveling, it could be by plane or bus, also while visiting main attractions, be extra careful on closed spaces and if you can, avoid closed spaces.

So, while doing this research on COVID-19 traveling restrictions I thought to myself “well, for now, traveling abroad is not going to happen”, but wait! there are other options, and for sure, some that I absolutely love:

Discover your own country, while being super careful, you can travel around Bolivia without any restrictions; transportation might be an issue here but just be careful in the airport and flying (again, mask up!). But, if you have the chance, this is the time of your life for road tripping!

Enjoy natural areas, what about visiting our National Parks? Close to every main city there are options available: Cotapata National Park near La Paz, Tunari near Cochabamba, Amboró near Santa Cruz, Cordillera de Sama near Tarija, just to name a few.

Is there an adventurer in you? well, go hiking and camping! There are so many open spaces where you can be alone with nature in the mountains and in the lowlands. If you want to discover our mountains, you can contact an AGMTB guide and visit Mururata lagoons, Tuni Condoriri Base Camp and close hiking routes like Pico Austria, if you want to enjoy Titicaca Lake, you can camp around the “Sleeping Dragon” at Santiago de Okola. If you visit the east, be sure to camp around Chochis or spend a couple of days at Refugio Los Volcanes near Amboró National Park.

So there it is, the world has changed and so have we, and this is a great opportunity to experience Bolivia, its culture and its amazing landscapes, just be sure to plan ahead, respect local communities and their regulations (some are not open to visitors yet) and protect yourself and others (pack a “pandemic bag” with face masks, hand sanitiser, wipes), keep your distance, and please, take all your garbage with you, if possible, until you are back in your city.
